Welcome to the ILND Court Access Kiosk!

The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois has created a kiosk pilot project as a new way for incarcerated individuals to submit common filings with the court for greater efficiency to start your case.

The benefit of using the kiosk will allow for faster case initiation and processing times. Incarcerated individuals still have the option to submit paper filings through the mail, which does have longer processing times.

A couple of things to know before you start:

  • Each screen is designed to be easy to understand and will take you through the process step by step.
  • You will be asked at the beginning for an IFP application or confirmation that you are paying the full filing fee.
  • If you are submitting an IFP application, you will need to have the paperwork completed (in hard copy) and ready to be scanned and uploaded. (No filing fee or IFP application is needed for a 2255 motion.)
  • The kiosk is designed to be used in one session, which means you are not able to save your work in the event you need to exit the program prior to the submission step.
  • Once you submit your filing, you will have the opportunity to print a receipt confirming your submission; a formal notice from the court will follow (sent via mail) indicating the judge assigned to your case and the case number.

The kiosk is currently designed for submission of the following documents:

  • Civil Rights Complaint (under Section 1983 or Bivens)
  • 2255 Motion to Vacate, Set Aside, or Correct Sentence (person in federal custody)
  • Petition for Writ of Habeas Corpus (person in state custody)
  • Petition for Writ of Habeas Corpus (person in federal custody)
  • Motion for Attorney Representation
  • Profile Information Form
  • IFP Application
